About 4th NMIF

This is the fourth edition of a forum which has emerged as one of the major events and highly anticipated forum in Malaysia’s maritime industry calendar. NMIF has grown from strength to strength from the inaugural forum held in 2010.

The theme 'Seeking Opportunities Amid Challenges' is an aptly chosen one given that the marine industry – not only in Malaysia but worldwide – is facing strong headwinds. Shipyards, shipowners and other maritime industry players are operating against the backdrop of sluggish global economic and trade growth, overcapacity in the shipping industry, low oil price and deep cutbacks in offshore exploration and production activities. The shipbuilding / ship repairing (SBSR) industry especially has come under severe pressure amid thin orderbooks as shipowners cut back on fleet expansion and oil majors reduce their capital expenditure. Many shipyards have seen revenues plunging in recent years and some have even exited the business, while the SBSR industry shows no convincing sign of turning the corner anytime soon.

Amid this challenging business landscape, there are still pockets of opportunities available within the industry. Yards focusing on building certain types of vessels and fabricating offshore structures still in demand by shipowners and oil and gas industry are still making good business. Same with yards focusing on MRO (maintenance, repair, overhaul) and conversion, and those which can deliver products and services at competitive cost, in good time and at a high degree of customer service.

Against this background, 4NMIF is held to provide a platform for stakeholders in the industry to congregate and explore such opportunities and share insights and ideas on how they are overcoming the turbulence facing the SBSR industry. The forum features speakers and role players who are leading experts in their respective fields within the industry, including policy formulation, marine technology, shipbuilding and ship repairing. They will share their wealth of experience and vast knowledge to point towards the opportunities in the industry which will surely be beneficial to the participants.
