About Symbiosis 3.0
MTDC’s Graduate Entrepreneurship Programme or Symbiosis as appropriately dubbed, is aimed to train selected graduates to become technopreneurs. Symbiosis is a comprehensive programme that covers aspects of commercialisation as well as entrepreneurship. At the end of the programme, selected candidates will lead start-up companies to commercialise technologies from the Universities/Research Institutes (Uni/RI) that have been carefully chosen by MTDC. Symbiosis start-up companies will then be able to apply for MTDC’s fund to operate from any of our Technology Centers and receives nurturing and other value added services just like any other companies within MTDC’s ecosystem.
Symbiosis 3.0 programme, which focuses on graduates of local and foreign higher institutions of learning including universities, polytechnics and community colleges, follows the success of the Symbiosis 1.0 and Symbiosis 2.0 programes.
This programme offers funding ranging from RM50,000 to RM500,000 to commercialise research and development (R&D) products. The funds will be channelled through MTDC's Commercialisation of Research & Development Fund (CRDF), aim to promote commercialisation of locally developed technologies by students of local universities and at research institutions.
Currently there are 75 active start up, 163 technopreneurs within the Symbiosis Programme at various stages of commercialisation activities and 84 jobs have been created since the inception of Symbiosis Programme.
About MTDC
MTDC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Berhad and has been the key player in commercialisation and management of government funding since the 7th Malaysia Plan.
The company was set-up in 1992 to promote the adoption of technologies by local companies via commercialisation of local R&D or acquisition of foreign technologies. Since then, MTDC has been a key player in commercialisation and management of Government funds. Currently, MTDC manages six funds amounting to RM 1.8 billion, specifically the Commercialisation of R&D Fund (CRDF), Technology Acquisition Fund (TAF), Hala Fund,Business Start-Up Fund (BSF), Business Growth Fund (BGF) and Business Expansion Fund (BEF).
Besides fund management, MTDC also provides an integrated support services for technopreneurs which includes advisory services such as mentoring, soft-landing, branding, fund raising, international collaboration and networking. MTDC’s commercialisation ecosystem has provided funding and assistance to over 500 technology-based companies that are involved in a wide range of activities ranging from the agricultural sector to ICT.
In the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP) and 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) alone, companies that were recipients of MTDC’s Commercialisation of Research and Development Fund (CRDF) and Technology Acquisition Fund (TAF) generated a total of RM1.974 billion in sales and contributed towards the creation of 5,261 new jobs and a total of 465 Intellectual Property Rights were filed.
