Project Overview

The Tokachi region, where Obihiro City is situated, is one the most important food production hubs in Japan blessed with great climate and geography, and has been working towards the economic revitalization, under the “FOOD VALLEY TOKACHI” system which promotes value-added food products. The objective of the Project is to support Kedah State (Malaysia) and Chiangmai Province (Thailand) to promote regional branding, by improving the food safety and security level through sharing experiences of the “FOOD VALLEY TOKACHI” system. Furthermore, for economic development which utilizes the regional specialty, the Project also promotes collaboration among companies to develop new products through personnel and technology exchanges which will lead to business matching.

Edoya Co., Ltd is a company producing processed seafood product. In addition to the production factories in Japan, they have been eyeing on OEM possibilities overseas. The company has been involved in industrial survey in Thailand and Malaysia through participation in the JICA Partnership Program, and also has showcased their products at exhibitions in Malaysia like SMIDEX (June 2014) and MIHAS, and since then has been considering possibilities to market its products for muslim markets in South East Asia. During MIHAS 2015, with collaboration with the Kedah state, the Project has showcased the salmon skin chip where Edoya met JABI RICE which owns food production facilities in Kedah, and from there, both companies started to visit each other’s factory.

In February this year, there was a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) signed in Japan by both companies to proceed to trial production run. In April this year, JABI RICE proposed a new curry flavor of salmon skin chip for trial in close collaboration with Edoya. As both Companies have agreed on certain business model regarding the product, they agreed to sign the OEM contract in order to prepare production equipment for the halal salmon skin chip.

Future Plan

The JABI RICE factory is halal ready while the halal application for the product is in progress that is expected to be approved by mid next year. Once the production line is well equipped and halal certification received later, JABI RICE will start production according to the OEM contract with Edoya for the Malaysia domestic market as well as overseas.
