PRESS STATEMENT MINISTER OF HEALTH MALAYSIA : MINISTRY OF HEALTH MALAYSIA AND WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION TO FORGE CLOSER RELATIONSHIP ON CAPACITY BUILDING

Friday 26/05/2017

PUTRAJAYA, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) would like to congratulate Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who has been elected as the new Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday.

Dr. Tedros who is a malaria expert is the first person from the African region ever to head the agency, replacing Dr. Margaret Chan who has held the post for the past decade. I am pleased to be among the privileged few that was able to have a private session with Dr Tedros at WHO HQ in Geneva , alongside Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the Director General of Health Malaysia and Dato’ Amran Mohamed Zin, the Permanent Representative of Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations (UN).

We discussed at length various healthcare issues that has profound impact both regionally and globally . It include Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health system transformation as a pathway towards affordable, accessible and equitable healthcare delivery . As one of his priority area, Dr Tedros looks forward to work with Malaysia in advancing UHC, given our excellent track record within a short time since independence. There are multiple lessons that can be learned from our model, and Malaysia will continue to play this role globally through the Joint Learning Network (JLN) platform to share our best practices.

Dr Tedros was particularly intrigued with the way Malaysia played a central role in collaborating with international partners and local collaborators in bringing down the cost of Hepatitis C treatment to a very affordable rate. The unique research ecosystem in Malaysia coordinated by Clinical Research Malaysia and Clinical Research Centre, in collaboration with Drug for Neglected Disease Initiatives (DNDi) and other key partners, has now attracted worldwide attention as this distinctive model can be emulated for many other similar trials to bring down the cost of treatment for expensive treatment. In line with the Sector 17 of Sustainable Development Goal, we are convinced that this partnership model can close the gap of equitable access to medicine.

We are also glad that Dr Tedros has agreed for more opportunities for technical capacity building to be allocated to developing country through short-term attachment program with WHO. International exposure for our young and senior officers will be crucial as Malaysia continue to play an ever-increasing role in the global and regional arena for health. Going forward, we look forward to have a close collaboration with Dr Tedros and wish him all the best for his endeavor.
