BRINGING COSPLAY CREATIVITY INTO RIVER CLEAN-UP

Monday 24/09/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 (Bernama) -- On a bright sunny morning in the city of Kuala Lumpur, members of the public cosplayed their favorite anime or manga characters except this time, they are dressing up to clean one of the city’s most polluted river.

In conjunction with World Rivers Day celebration, this cosplay river clean-up is organized by local environmental NGO, EcoKnights in partnership with the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage. The volunteers cleaned up a specific stretch of Klang River starting from Central Market until Medan Pasar.

This activity is a form of public engagement under the River of Life (ROL) project – a Greater Kuala Lumpur initiative by Ministry of Territories (KWP). The main objective of the activity is to educate and provide a hands-on experience to the public on the current situation with rivers in urban areas. The event provided an opportunity to the volunteers to collect organic, solid waste and debris found at the river side and pedestrian walk to further help them understand the kind of wastes that are often dumped into rivers or at the river banks in the city.

“I think this is the first time the city has ever gotten people in costumes to come out and volunteer to clean up a river. It’s an effort to socialize and gain the attention of the younger generation to take notice of our rivers, the man-made impacts that we are contributing to it, and we hope that this event will help enhance everyone’s understanding on the relationship between bad waste management and habits and how it harms our rivers,” said Yasmin Rasyid, president of EcoKnights.

The clean-up activity was also joined by officers from DID, including Tuan Haji Md. Khairi Bin Selamat, director of River Basin Zone Management DID, who was dressed up as a cowboy. The presence of the cosplay clean-up team created a more positive vibe for tourists or public who were visiting KL City, especially near Masjid Jamek and Medan Pasar. Curious tourists were informed about the ROL project and some even joined the clean-up.
