ECONOMIC, PROMOTION AND INVESTMENT MISSION TO PAKISTAN, IRAN AND TURKEY, 18TH - 26TH JANUARY
Friday 18/01/2019
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Economic, Promotion and Investment Mission to Pakistan, Iran and Turkey by Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) will be held from 18th to 26th January 2019. The delegation headed by YB Deputy Minister of Primary Industries, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin with MPI Secretary General, YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Tan Yew Chong will hold meetings with counterparts at relevant Ministries and Agencies in those countries. Senior officials of the agency under the Ministry and representatives of commodity industry associations were also part of the delegation.
The objective of the mission is to explain the advantages of Malaysian commodity products as compared to other producing countries. Among them are the quality, food safety and nutrients found in palm oil as compared to other vegetable oils, the quality and credibility of timber products and specialty rubber products. In addition, the mission will also deliberate on trade issues related to market access of Malaysian commodity products. These include high import taxes of up to 40 per cent (%) on palm oil products imposed by Iran and other non-tariff barriers to be imposed by Pakistan such as the ban on food products (vanaspati) containing palm oil.
The three countries are among the major markets for Malaysia’s commodity sector such as palm oil, rubber and timber. In 2017, exports to Pakistan, Iran and Turkey for the three commodities were RM3.05 billion, RM2.48 billion and RM 3.63 billion respectively. Therefore, the mission is important not only to maintain market share of Malaysian commodity products in the country but also to increase the market share to a higher level.
Activities that have been planned throughout the mission include conferences, seminar presentations, roundtable discussions, bilateral meetings and other stakeholder engagement. The efforts are in line with the aspiration of the Ministry to further promote the commodity industry in the current and coming years. The progressive development of the commodity industry is among the important economic sectors in uplifting the socio-economic and well-being of the nation.
