TAIWAN-MALAYSIA MEDICAL EXCHANGE ADVANCING CROSS BORDER MEDICAL COOPERATION

Monday 23/09/2019

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia, Sept 23 (Bernama-PRNewswire) -- Taiwan's largest medical center, the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH) held the International Conference on Integrated Cancer Treatment on the 21st of September at Penang's Bayview Hotel. The event attracted more than one hundred medical professionals, academics, business owners, Taiwanese alumni and members of the public who joined the panel in a detailed discussion on lung, brain and liver cancer as well as experience sharing.

The International Conference on Integrated Cancer Treatment was organised by CGMH and co-organised by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) in corporation with two of Penang's outstanding medical institutions; the Island Hospital and Lam Wah Ee Hospital.

According to Prof. Lu Sheng Nan, the Vice Dean of Chiayi CGMH, the exchange received an overwhelming support from Penang's medical professionals, which greatly boosted his confidence in deepening overseas collaborations with the Taiwanese medical professionals. The meaningful interactions between the Taiwanese and Malaysian medical industry players have set the stage for a greater degree of corporation for the future.

Sharing Strategies to Battle 3 Major Cancers

CGMH has been working hard to develop a good working relationship between Taiwan and Malaysia starting with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with many Malaysian hospitals at the beginning of this year. In the months that follow, CGMH donated medical equipment and provided training for many Malaysian medical professionals. In July this year, CGMH also invited delegates from Penang's Parkway Pantai Medical Group to Taiwan for a study visit about the use of medical information systems.

Joining Prof. Liu & Prof. Lu at the conference were other distinguished medical experts from Taiwan including Dr. Wang Chun Chieh, Vice Chief of Dept. of Proton and Radiation Therapy Center, CGMH, Linkou; and Prof. Lu Sheng Nan, the Vice Dean of Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital who shared their insights on the latest techniques for the treatment of the three cancers; and Dr. Huang Eng Yen, Chief of Dept. of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, CGMH, Kaohsiung who discussed the highly advanced Proton Therapy. Dr. Saw Min Hong from Island Hospital and Dr. Chan Jun Yeen from Lam Wah Ee Hospital were invited to speak about the standard treatment for lung and brain cancer in Malaysia. It is hoped that the exchange of ideas between Taiwan and Malaysia will lead to greater understanding and progress to provide patients with better medical care.
