PETRONAS PROMOTES SUSTAINABLE LIVING AMONG YOUNG MINDS THROUGH STEM

Monday 18/03/2024

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- The students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Keramat were given an unexpected treat when Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton made a special appearance at the school. He joined the students in carrying out several experiments showcasing the benefits of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

SMK Seri Keramat is among the 39 schools in Malaysia that participated and emerged as winner in a responsible waste management programme led by a PETRONAS subsidiary, PETRONAS Chemicals Group. The said programme is in line with one of PETRONAS’ social impact pillars – Planting Tomorrow – which focuses on educating young minds on the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable living.

PETRONAS General Manager of Brand Advocacy Management, Strategic Communications, Group Strategic Relations and Communications, Khairul Hisham Mazlan said, “At PETRONAS, we are passionate about driving progress towards a better future for all, and this includes preparing communities to be more adaptive, resilient and contribute towards a healthier planet. This initiative with SMK Seri Keramat not only provides students with hands-on STEM learning opportunities but also serves as a platform for us to foster a shared understanding of our collective responsibility.”

The school principal, Noraini Ibrahim, expressed excitement from being able to witness first-hand the school’s efforts to integrate eco-friendly initiatives into its curriculum, as she believes in nurturing students on the significance of sustainable efforts and practices, which over time, can cultivate an eco-conscious community.

Lewis said, “It was a privilege to meet the students at SMK Seri Keramat and see the ongoing positive work at the school. Their enthusiasm for STEM subjects was clear; I thoroughly enjoyed helping in some of their experiments and hopefully one day we will see some of the pupils working in our sport.  The passion for sustainability and biodiversity was also inspiring to see. It’s such an important topic and it’s great to see the kids taking such an interest from a young age.”

Khairul Hisham added, "This year is a special year for PETRONAS – we celebrate our 50th anniversary. What you see today is a testament to our passion to continuously progress and create better solutions together that benefit people, our partners and the planet. We will continue to be committed to creating a sustainable future whilst constantly seeking to establish meaningful collaborations to deliver solutions that enriches lives.”
