JAKARTA, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Under the theme 'Shaping the Future: Building Better Regulations for Tomorrow', the 9th Annual ASEAN-OECD Good Regulatory Practices Network (GRPN) Meeting concluded successfully at the Westin Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event brought together key policymakers, regulators, and experts from ASEAN and OECD countries to strengthen regulatory governance in an increasingly dynamic and complex global environment.
 
Co-chaired by Zahid Ismail, Director General of the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), and Mark Steel, Director of Regulatory Systems, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, New Zealand, the meeting emphasised the importance of cross-border collaboration in developing robust, adaptive regulatory frameworks. Since its establishment in 2015, the ASEAN-OECD GRPN has served as a vital platform for sharing best practices, fostering mutual learning, and empowering member countries to implement effective regulatory reforms.
 
Malaysia showcased its commitment to regulatory modernisation through the Bureaucratic Reform Circular and the Regulatory Experimentation Circular. These initiatives guide ministries, agencies, and local governments in adopting innovative approaches to streamline processes using technology, promote agility in regulatory practices, and pilot initiatives that reduce compliance burdens while enhancing productivity and competitiveness. These efforts have delivered measurable results, including reduced processing times, improved service delivery, and a more attractive investment environment.
 
A standout session, led by the Legal Advisor from the Personal Data Protection Department, Ministry of Digital, Malaysia, addressed the critical issue of data breach notifications. This presentation explored challenges and requirements for managing data privacy in the digital age, equipping participants with actionable strategies to navigate emerging regulatory demands.
 
As Malaysia prepares to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, it will host the 10th Annual ASEAN-OECD GRPN Meeting. This milestone event will further reinforce Malaysia’s leadership in advancing innovative, citizen-centred regulatory frameworks. The meeting will provide a platform to deepen regional collaboration and promote forward-thinking practices that balance economic growth with societal well-being.
 
The 9th GRPN Meeting reaffirmed the critical role of agile regulatory frameworks in addressing global challenges. Malaysia’s leadership—evident through its co-chair role and ongoing reforms—reflects its dedication to fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. By championing regulatory practices that drive competitiveness and social progress, Malaysia continues to set a benchmark for regional excellence.
